One tandem, one camera and miles of possibilities
Cycling Plus, the UK’s leading road cycling magazine has got the exclusive scoop on one man’s epic journey on a tandem bike, travelling from Alaska to Argentina!
On sale now, Cycling Plus follows the incredible journey which takes Dominic Gill 18,000 miles, with the aid of willing passengers or ‘stokers’ who joined him on the trip of a lifetime on his trusty tandem ‘Achilles’.
Starting his trip in June 2006, Dominic planned to film a documentary chronicling all of the characters and sights of his trip, and ended with up with 270 stokers to help speed him on his way. Most stokers spent a day or two in the saddle, but one happy passenger stayed for six weeks, traversing three countries in central America in tandem.
In the course of the two year journey, he suffered almost 300 flat tyres and covered all manner of terrain including mountains, ice flats and deserts, taking in 15 countries and gaining a whole host of new friends.
Dominic Gill said:
“I left not knowing whether such a seemingly ridiculous challenge was even possible, but over two years later I finished having learned, shared and sweated an infinite amount more than if I were to have cycled on a normal bike. Sharing my journey with locals and non-cyclists made the experience so much more than a cycling journey”
Rob Spedding, Editor of Cycling Plus said:
“When I first heard of Dom’s epic ride I just knew that Cycling Plus needed to cover it – it’s exactly the kind of incredible, inspirational story that our readers enjoy. It helps that, to many people, the idea of setting off on an 18,000-mile tandem ride on your own will sound like complete lunacy!”
Issue 220 of Cycling Plus is on sale now, priced at £3.99. The magazine also features an essential touring gear guide, 30 pages of the latest kit road tested, as well as the best British cycling routes and health and fitness advice.
