Future’s Cycling Plus test out the best in budget bikesThe world economy has stopped, you can’t afford a new car and you’re going to have sell Grandma to get petrol for the old one – what can you do? Get on your bike!

Cycling is the cheapest, fastest and most economical way of getting around, it’s loads of fun and it’s good for you too – it’s a win-win situation. So, to help you through these tough times, Future’s Cycling Plus have done the hard work for you, and in a series of ‘Top Gear’ style challenges, have checked out the best bikes on the budget market.

The brief was to find a fun, useful bike that could be used for nipping to the shops and pub, as well as commuting to work. The Cycling Plus team each had £100 to spend on their trusty steeds, and were subjected to a challenge which included a train journey and an 17 mile race from Bristol to Bath. Oh yes, and they had to carry some provisions with them – half a dozen eggs, a baguette and some cream-filled scones.

The bikes that were tested included to two bikes from a charity, a supermarket flat-pack special, a Cash Converters pawn bike, a freebie from an internet recycling site and a bike dredged up from a skip. All of the bikes were given the extensive Cycling Plus treatment and reviews, and the results can be read in the April issue of the magazine, on sale now.

Rob Spedding, Editor of Cycling Plus said:
“Who says you can’t have fun on the cheap? We wanted to prove that enjoy cycling, you don’t need to break the bank. We discovered that if you want to get to work, ride to the shops, pedal to the pub or simply have a laugh your mates then 100 quid is more than enough!”

Issue 221 of Cycling Plus is on sale now, priced at £3.99. Other features this month include training plans for a 100-mile sportive, a look at the everyday heroes of cycling, and a cycling tour of Iran. The very latest spring kit and cycling products are also tested and reviewed.
