World’s best-selling 3D title gets unrivalled access to CG movie studio
18/05/09 – 3D World, Future’s market-leading magazine for 3D artists, is celebrating Pixar’s next smash hit movie UP, with a special issue focusing on the work of the CG animation powerhouse.
With the Disney-backed movie hitting UK cinema screens later this year, the July issue of 3D World offers three exclusively designed collectable covers featuring the main characters of UP. Housed within a deluxe, special edition wallet is one of three stunning Pixar covers for readers to discover. Each cover features a different UP character: Carl, the retired 78-year old balloon salesman, or Russell – the child who stows away as 10,000 balloons float Carl’s house away to South America. Future has also created a third ultra-limited cover for subscribers, with Kevin – the exotic bird and Dug the dog. A further 1,000 copies of this rare cover will be distributed across 3D World’s international print run.
Thanks to unrivalled access to the team at Pixar, 3D World delivers an in-depth seven-page feature with input from key members of the UP production team, as the magazine reveals the pivotal new animation techniques created especially for the movie. 3D World also presents the history of RenderMan, Pixar’s advanced rendering system, which marks its 21st anniversary in 2009. So influential is the system that 50 of the last 53 Oscar nominees for visual effects use it.
Rounding off the issue, 3D World delivers an exclusive animation masterclass with video from renowned CG animator Kyle Balda. Balda was an important figure in the development of Pixar’s distinctive animation style – leaving his mark on movies including A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc and Toy Story 2. The disc includes software and digital content worth over £300, including Hexagon 2.2 for Microsoft Windows.
Fiona Tully is Associate Publisher of 3D World:
“The initial buzz from Cannes is that UP will be a hit with both critics and movie lovers, so we are delighted to have worked closely with Pixar to ensure we got the inside track on how the film was made, and how the company has successfully shaped itself to be the world’s leading CG animation studio. 3D World has always been respected by those in the industry and Pixar’s support is a testament to Future’s world leading position for digital creative titles.”
The Pixar special July issue of 3D World goes on sale Monday, 1st June. The magazine goes on sale at a cover price of £6 – including a cover disc with software and digital content worth more than £300 and an exclusive animation masterclass.
