‘Greatest performance Vauxhall’ revealed by Future’s Total Vauxhall magazine

Lotus Carlton crowned as magazine celebrates 100th issue

Lotus Carlton crowned as magazine celebrates 100th issue The Lotus Carlton has been voted as the ‘greatest performance Vauxhall’ by the readers of Total Vauxhall magazine.

The magazine opened the floor to its readers, with hundreds taking part in the poll to find the greatest performance Vauxhall and crown the Lotus Carlton as the winner. Issue 100 of Total Vauxhall turns its spotlight on the top ten cars, detailing why the cars have found a place in the heart of readers.

The Lotus Carlton was a Vauxhall of the likes that was never seen before – or since. Fitted with a 3.6-litre straight-six engine with two Garrett T25 turbo chargers, the power output was a massive 377 bhp. The more expensive BMW M5 could only muster 340 bhp and it was electronically limited to 155 mph. The Carlton had no such restriction and stormed on to a reputed 176 mph, which famously saw people call for the car to be banned.

The top 5 performance Vauxhalls were:

1. Lotus Carlton
2. VX220
3. Astra VXR
4. Vectra GSi
5. Nova SR

Dougie Rankine, Acting Editor of Total Vauxhall said:

“The Lotus Carlton remains the most iconic of all Vauxhalls. Its looks are as striking as ever, while the performance can still match many of today’s cars. This is a car with the underpinnings of a family saloon car that held a Nürburgring lap record for years. As it approaches its 20th birthday, the Lotus Carlton is as sought after as ever.

The Lotus Carlton is a complex and sometimes-temperamental car and not one you can run on a budget. We’ll wager though that if we could all have a ‘Vauxhall Dream Garage’, it’d appear more than any other car.”

Total Vauxhall is also celebrating its 100th issue with a special cover dedicated to the heritage of Vauxhall, with four classic models displayed alongside the Vauxhall Griffin logo. The magazine features an article on Vauxhall heroes, features on the Astra VXR and other cars, as well as a free Total Vauxhall keyring.

The full list of the top ten greatest performance Vauxhalls can be seen in issue 100 of Total Vauxhall which hits the newsstand today priced at £4.25.
