Triathlon Plus triumphs at London Triathlon

Team from enthusiast’s magazine takes first place in the relay

Team from enthusiast’s magazine takes first place in the relayThe team from Triathlon Plus, the latest magazine launch from Future, stormed to victory to win the team relay at the Mazda London Triathlon last weekend. In a field of almost 400 finishing teams, Triathlon Plus’s ‘A’ team was the only team to finish the course in less than two hours, finishing five minutes ahead of the next team.

The team relay is a standard Olympic distance triathlon, with a different team member doing each of the disciplines: a 1500m swim, followed by a 40km bike ride and finishing with a 10km run. Instead of the usual transition period between each of the three disciplines, the timing chip and race number are passed from the swimmer to the cyclist, then from the cyclist to the runner.

Publisher of Future’s T3 gadget magazine, Paul Button gave the team a fantastic start with his swim, which was fourth fastest in the race at 22:13 mins. Paul is a former national and international swimmer, and has completed two Ironman triathlons, as well as being selected to represent Great Britain in the 2009 Age Group World Triathlon Sprint Championships.

Paul handed over to BikeRadar.com’s Jeff Jones who pulled the team emphatically into the lead with a 56:49 bike split, the fastest ride of the race by three minutes. Jeff is a keen competitive cyclist, having won three journalists’ world titles, 18 open time trials and an age-group silver in the British time trial championships in 2008.

Another smooth transition sent Triathlon Plus’s Coaching Editor Phil Mosley out for an easy 31:37 jog (fourth fastest) to bring the team home to victory. Phil was British Grand Prix Duathlon Champion in 2005, and was on the Great Britain elite team for two years at the World and European Championships. A former triathlon coach, his run at the London Triathlon was a new personal best for him.

Not too far behind was Triathlon Plus’s ‘B’ team, finishing 30th out of 397 teams, the team was led by the magazine’s Editor, Liz Hufton – just three weeks after completing her first Ironman in Zurich, Switzerland.

Liz Hufton, Editor of Triathlon Plus said:

“The London Triathlon was a fantastic experience for the Triathlon Plus team just four months after the magazine’s launch. Triathlon Plus has the best training and kit advice on the market and celebrates the excitement of competing and it’s great to show that we practise what we preach.

“Behind all of Future’s titles are staff who share their readers’ passions and the ‘A’ team’s victory is a great illustration of this. To put their result in context, their overall time was only 10 minutes slower than the winning elite male athlete. Pretty impressive when you consider these are all guys who hold down full-time, hectic jobs with Future in addition to their training commitments!”
