Winners of Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2009 announced

08/12/09 – The winners of the annual Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition have been revealed, with an Icelandic photographer scooping the prestigious ‘Photographer of the Year’ crown for “Partners” – a shot of two horses in the snow.

The annual Digital Camera Photographer of the Year is organised by Future’s popular digital Camera Magazine and sister-site PhotoRadar.com, with support from Jessops, Epson and the Royal Photographic Society. In 2009 event coverage was bolstered with the support of broadcaster SkyArts and website, Telegraph.co.uk who championed the This is Britain and World in Motion categories respectively.

Now the world’s largest online photographer contest, the event now attracts over 100,000 submissions a year from Australia to Zimbabwe.   It took a panel of judges, including representatives from Getty Images, Magnum Photos and the Press Association to work through the thousands of images to draw up shortlists for each of the categories.

Partners, the overall winning image of two horses in Harfnarfjordur on a cold day was taken by Icelandic photographer Bragi J.Ingbergsson on a Canon EOS 5D camera.  Judges praised the shot’s “simple and quiet nature”, singling out Bragi’s “vision and perseverance to give an ordinary scene significance and a sense of wildness.
