Future’s Total Film heads down the rabbit hole

alice19/01/10 – The latest issue of influential movie magazine Total Film gets curiouser and curiouser as it goes behind the scenes on Tim Burton’s eagerly-anticipated 3D Alice in Wonderland movie.

Released on Monday, 5th March the Disney movie sees a 19-year old Alice return to Wonderland.  Starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, it is the seventh movie in the partnership between the A-list actor and Burton, the cult director.   The Brit heavy cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Matt Lucas, Alan Rickman and Barbara Windsor.

Despite being a Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland retains Burton’s trademark twisted darkness with Red Queen actress, Helena Bonham Carter stating the film isn’t the typical family friendly output of the studio; “It’s not really very Disney is it?  But keep that quiet.  They haven’t really noticed.”  Darker comparisons continue with Tim Burton describing Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter as a “child friendly version of The Exorcist.”

With Johnny Depp describing his own character as “looking like a lit match”, co-star Matt Lucas, who plays both Tweedledee and Tweedledum was less flattering, describing him as “Ronald McDonald, a young Mick Hucknall, a bit of ex-England footballer Ray Parlour and a bit of Charlie Dimmock.”

Discussing his first major Hollywood role, the Little Britain star remains concerned about cinema’s love affair with 3D; “People can tell you’ve put on weight.  My stomach’s going to be landing in your King Cone.”

Also inside the latest issue of Total Film, the magazine predicts its biggest movies of 2010 and also speaks exclusively with Hollywood legends Robert Duvall and Mel Gibson.

The full 5-page Alice in Wonderland preview features in the March issue of Total  Film, on sale Thursday, 21st January, with a coverprice of £3.99.
