What do Slayer, Barack Obama, Peter Andre, Avatar and Coronation Street all have in common? These cover stars have all been shortlisted for the 2010 Maggies, a national poll backed by the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) to celebrate and award the best magazine covers of the past year, and Metal Hammer is leading the attack with its bloody cover shot of iconic heavy metal band Slayer.
The Maggies are annual awards voted for by the public, and Metal Hammer is going head to head with entertainment stalwarts Heat, Hello, Radio Times and Empire for the coveted title of Entertainment Cover of the Year. Metal Hammer is now calling on metal heads to join in the poll and help Slayer beat Barack Obama and Peter Andre.
To coincide with their new album ‘World Painted Blood’, the team at Metal Hammer created a gruesome, medical journal-style cover with four portraits, each with different facial trauma.
Using a combination of ceramic human skulls, an industry leading prosthetic make-up artist who has worked on the Harry Potter films, and photographer Steve Brown’s unique skills, art editor James Isaacs produced a cover that in true Metal Hammer style both shocked and celebrated the music with unforgettably striking covers that have become the magazine’s trademark.
Alexander Milas, Editor of Future’s Metal Hammer said:
“Slayer are truly one of the greatest, most ferocious and iconic metal bands of all time, and their brand of blackened thrash has been making heads bang around the world for decades.
We’re calling on fans of Slayer and Metal Hammer to vote and help make Slayer the number one entertainment cover. They’re the heaviest band of all time – surely, they can take on a bunch of blue, computer-generated space elves!”
