Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz talk fame and the future of cinema

Total Film, the influential movie magazine and website, sits down with Hollywood superstars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz this month, delivering an exclusive six-page interview.

The Hollywood A-listers were reunited ahead of their new romcom action movie, Knight & Day (released Friday, 2nd July) which sees Cruise play a secret agent tasked with protecting a scientist, whilst Diaz is the girl next door who gets swept along for the ride.

The film takes on the new wave of 3D spectaculars, but relies on script, storytelling and star power – as Cruise and Diaz have collectively made over $12.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Tom Cruise states:

“The most important thing to me is entertaining the audience, and it always has been.  I’ve worked since I was 8 years old and I saved money to go to the movies, so to have that opportunity… I just consider myself a student of film, of storytelling. The film itself is the most important.”

Cameron Diaz discusses the decisions she makes in choosing her work, and why she believes all actors are different.

“Stars is a generalisation. We’re not all the same, and all actors do it differently.  If there was one formula then everyone would do it.  But the thing to know is that we’re not all calculated.  We don’t go ‘Wait a second, if I do this, if I smile in this scene…”

Throughout the interview, Cruise reflects on his thirty year career – having learnt “invaluable” lessons from Dustin Hoffman, Martin Scorcese and the late Paul Newman:

“My mistakes are my mistakes, and the decisions that I’ve made, I know why I made them.  You can’t look at something as ‘I’m going to fail’ or ‘This is a risk.’  Leaving your house in the morning is a risk.  I’ve always wanted to be engaged in life and in work.”

“When I was a young actor they said ‘you’ll never make it out of your teens.’ Then I wasn’t going to make it out of my twenties.  Then I’d never make it out of my thirties.  Well I’m 47 now.”

“All I want to do is make movies. And I’ll keep going until the day they say I can’t keep going anymore.”

The full six-page interview with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz is in the July issue of Total Film, on sale Thursday, 13th May.  The latest edition also includes interviews with Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and the cast of Sex and the City 2.
