- Cult classic Blade Runner takes no prisoners
- Blockbuster runners-up include Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings
- More than 10,000 votes polled
23/05/12 SFX Presents unveils its definitive list of the Top 100 Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Movies All Time, crowning Ridley Scott’s dystopian vision of a replicant-infested Los Angeles as the greatest film of its kind.
With over 10,000 votes polled, Scott’s masterpiece triumphs over some of the biggest blockbusters in movie history, including The Empire Strikes Back (2nd place), Star Wars (4th place) and Scott’s own Alien and Aliens (8th place and 3rd place respectively).
SFX Presents Editor Russell Lewin says: “With Blade Runner now being voted the favourite science fiction film of all time, it has completed a remarkable climb in popularity since its ignominious beginnings. This was a film that was both a commercial and critical failure when it was released in 1982. Since then, its reputation has slowly grown and grown. And no wonder – Ridley Scott’s film is a striking work. Full of ambiguity, with complex and fascinating themes, it has stunning visuals that have been influencing sci-fi movies ever since, and rewards the viewer the more they watch it. To hold off the likes of the first two Star Wars films, Alien and Aliens and The Lord Of The Rings films is an incredible achievement. SFX congratulates Blade Runner and Ridley Scott on this fantastic result!”
Previous surprise winner, Serenity drops to 7th place behind Andy and Larry Wachowski’s, The Matrix (6th place).
