04/10/12 T3 have recently announced that Lord Sugar will be the recipient of their 2012 Outstanding Contribution To Technology Award at the sixth annual T3 Gadget Awards in association with Qualcomm and EE.
Previous recipients of this award include Jon Rubinstein and Sir David Attenborough. This year, Lord Sugar will be presented his award by the co-founder of The Carphone Warehouse, Sir Charles Dunstone.
Lord Sugar is one of the most exceptional business leaders in the world. Founding Amstrad in 1967, he developed his import/export business into one of the foremost leaders in home computing in the 1980’s. Through developing the first satellite dish in 1989, Lord Sugar was instrumental in the creation and the bringing to market of Sky TV. Amstrad went on to become the European Number One supplier of satellite receivers. Knighted for Service to Business in 2000, Lord Sugar was also appointed to the House of Lords in 2009 as the government’s Enterprise Tsar. Lord Sugar’s empire has grown to include Viglen Ltd (IT service provider) Amsprop (property), and Amscreen (advertising). More recently, he has become the chairman of YouView. This new service allows access to television channels, radio stations, on-demand services and Internet content and is set revolutionise the television market.
Lord Sugar says, “I have been fortunate enough to receive a few honours and awards over the years, but this one is special and I am proud to accept it. When I look back at my career achievements since starting Amstrad in 1967 – from making hifi units, computers and the first Sky satellite dishes, to bringing YouView to market this year – the one thing that has kept me motivated is that I am a real tech geek at heart. Since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to crack something open, get my hands in there and understand how it works, be it a stereo, computer processor or a set-top box. I’d like to thank T3 and the award judges for recognising the contribution I have made to the industry.”
T3 editor, Luke Peters, adds: “Lord Sugar is one of the great names in British technology. Courageous and entrepreneurial in everything he has ever done, we are honoured that he has accepted this award.”
