Total Film Unveils The Best 50 Movies Of Its Lifetime To Celebrate 200th Edition

  • The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy scoops top prize
  • Christopher Nolan features twice in top 10
  • The Dark Knight tops Batman films

26/10/12 To celebrate its 200th issue, Total Film unveils the best 50 movies of Total Film’s 15 year lifetime. Selected by the brand’s movie experts, Total Film has arrived at THE definitive list, crowning The Lord Of The Rings trilogy number one!

Unable to single out just one of the films, the top spot goes to all three. With its stunning visuals, amazing story-telling and incredible acting, the unified glory of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy comes together to make a once-in-a-generation piece of cinema.

On receiving the honour, The Lord Of The Rings Director, Sir Peter Jackson, says: “On behalf of the cast and crew of The Lord Of The Rings, a heartfelt thank you to Total Film for this incredible honour. It’s very humbling to have the trilogy thought of in such a light, and while we might hesitate to say The Lord Of The Rings was the best film of anyone’s lifetime, we do know that making these movies was on of the very best times of our lives.”

The trilogy was so revered – generating $2.92 billion at the global box office – that it spawned the hotly anticipated prequel, The Hobbit, part one of which gets its worldwide premiere in Wellington, New Zealand on November 28.

Elsewhere, British-born director, Christopher Nolan features twice in the top 10 for his work on neo-noir psychological thriller, Memento (2nd place) and the psycho-operatic crime drama, The Dark Knight (6th place). Interestingly, The Dark Knight, electrified by Heath Ledger’s mad-dog Joker, is the only Batman film to make the final 50.

Total Film Editor, Jane Crowther says: “Total Film has been in existence during a fertile and diverse period in filmmaking and that’s reflected in the amazing range of movies voted for by the team. Admittedly, the number one film is actually three but we felt the The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is so special and unique that we couldn’t split it into three entries. We think Frodo would approve!”

The top 10 Best Movies Of Total Film’s Lifetime are:

  1. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
  2. Memento
  3. There Will Be Blood
  4. Magnolia
  5. Mulholland Dr.
  6. The Dark Knight
  7. Fight Club
  8. Lost In Translation
  9. Pan’s Labryinth
  10. Oldboy

The full list features in the latest issue of Total Film, on-sale 26 October.
