Working with Refuge to launch a nationwide ‘Comfort Blanket Campaign’, Future’s magazines are asking readers to knit small squares, which can be sewn together to create larger blankets. The blankets will then be given to the women and children who access Refuge’s services – with the target of making 100 blankets by Christmas.

Refuge is the magazines’ nominated charity for 2011 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. With one in four women experiencing domestic violence at some point in their lives, Refuge supports 1,600 women and children each day, providing a vital lifeline for those looking to escape the misery of abuse.

As part of the Comfort Blanket Campaign, beautiful patterns are available online in an e-book containing 26 different designs at http://www.justgiving.com/refugeblankets.

The magazines are making the e-book available for free, but are suggesting a small donation for each download. Readers can then access the patterns created by fantastic designers and stars of the knitting world including Alan Dart, Sarah Hatton, Judy Furlong and Simply Knitting and The Knitter’s very own Debora Bradley and Juliet Bernard.

The teams are encouraging everyone to get involved: from individuals and crafting novices to whole knitting groups. Readers can send in completed blankets directly to Refuge’s London offices, or give blankets or individual squares to the editorial team at October’s Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace.

Launched earlier this month, the first blanket has already been sent in by a Simply Knitting reader and has been given to a child in one of the charity’s refuges.

Kerry Lawrence, Publisher of Future’s Craft portfolio, says: “This campaign offers our readers the chance to put their skills to good use and do something really positive. Although this is only a small gesture, the Comfort Blanket Campaign shows sufferers that we care and will help to raise vital funds to support the work of Refuge.”

Sandra Horley, CBE and CEO of Refuge, says: “Domestic violence is the biggest issue impacting on women and children in this country. The statistics are shocking – two women are killed each week by a current or former partner in England and Wales and hundreds more women suffer in silence. Raising awareness of domestic violence is a crucial part of Refuge’s work which is why we’re delighted to be supported by Simply Knitting and The Knitter. The blankets will mean a great deal to the women and children who receive them, many of whom leave home with little more than the clothes they are wearing.”

Over 2.23 million global unique users visited the site last month, meaning that the website received 24% more traffic than the same period last year and even topped figures for July 2010, which is traditionally the month when interest in cycling is highest.

Since its inception in 1995, www.cyclingnews.com has grown to become the world’s largest cycling website. UK growth has increased a staggering 54% since last year alone, and with the Tour de France yet to start in July, the website is forecasting that 2011 will break all its previous records for online visitor numbers.

At the heart of this success is a dedicated editorial team, headed by Daniel Benson, who provide unique cycling content to millions of readers each month. Future’s development team, lead by Storm Fagan, and ongoing investment in search engine optimisation have also helped drive numbers as www.cyclingnews.com has climbed the ranks in relevant search engine results.

Mark Cantwell, Associate Publisher, says: “I would like to thank all of the teams and everyone involved in making this happen and I look forward to seeing the site generate even higher audience numbers in July 2011. This is proof that if you put the user first, and build a focussed and responsible strategy around their needs, you can generate true audience growth.”

With an impressive double entry in the top ten, Pink Floyd narrowly beat Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind album and The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which battled it out for second and third place respectively.

Sparked by a simple office debate, the team at MusicRadar decided to let their readers decide on the ultimate artwork design, with other shortlisted album covers including classics such as Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled album.

Also in the top ten were The Clash with their famous London Calling design and rock legends Iron Maiden with The Number Of The Beast album.

MusicRadar.com – The Greatest Album Cover of All Time:

1. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
2. Nirvana – Nevermind
3. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. The Clash – London Calling
5. Rage Against The Machine – Rage Against The Machine
6. Iron Maiden – The Number Of The Beast
7. The Beatles – The White Album
8. Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures
9. King Crimson – In The Court Of The Crimson King
10. Pink Floyd – Animals

Will Groves, Editor of MusicRadar.com, said:

“The Dark Side Of The Moon is conclusive proof that one simple, enduring image is the winning formula when it comes to album artwork, particularly when it’s harnessed to such an iconic musical work. Any of the top ten would have been worthy winners but the Floyd cover is a welcome reminder of a time when sleeve art meant much more than a jpeg a couple of hundred pixels wide in your iTunes library”.

New publishers confirmed to steer growth of market-leading Games portfolio.

Future, the special-interest media group, has announced two key appointments within its Entertainment portfolio, further reinforcing its senior team in a year of expansion and development.

James Kick is promoted to Associate Publisher, responsible for Official PlayStation, PSM3 and FirstPlay as well the annual Golden Joystick Awards. He will start his new role immediately, reporting to Group Publisher Simon Maxwell.

After working at advertising and design agencies including Publicis, James joined Future in 2008 to oversee the games marketing team. In the last two years he’s directed strategic campaigns for all of Future’s brands, including working closely with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) on the launch of FirstPlay and helping the Golden Joystick Awards achieve over 1.54 million consumer votes in 2010.

James says: “Due to the wide variety of media touchpoints we’re working across, it’s a brilliant time to be stepping into a publishing role. It’s going to be a great year for SCEE and I’m excited by the challenge of driving essential games media brands forward.”

Don Ditri has been appointed as Associate Publisher Digital, with direct responsibility for CVG, GamesRadar and the websites for Official Nintendo Magazine (www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk) and Xbox 360: The Official Magazine (www.oxm.co.uk). He will start in March and report to James Binns, Head of Edge International, PC Gaming and Online.

Don was Digital Marketing Manager at Future in 2004, before budget-exceeding success as Ad Sales Manager on CVG and GamesRadar. He returns to Future after two years as Commercial Development Manager at CBS Interactive, responsible for key brands such as GameSpot UK.

Don says: “Future is unquestionably one of the world’s leading games media companies. In an exciting year of expansion and development, I’m looking forward to helping drive forward its truly unique cross-media portfolio.”

Group Publisher Simon Maxwell says: “We spent a lot of time looking for the right people for these roles and I’m delighted with the calibre of appointment. James is extremely talented and illustrates the strength-in-depth the company has, while we know all about Don’s capabilities from his first spell at Future. We’re now very well-placed to realise everything we have planned and drive our brands to new heights.”

Site reaches more musicians than ever before with record audience figures

Future, the special interest media group and UK’s leading music-making publisher is strengthening its fast-growing musician’s website www.musicradar.com with the launch of two new services – a new channel dedicated to the bass sector, and a bespoke StoreFinder application aimed at driving footfall to independent retailers.

MusicRadar.com enjoyed its biggest ever month in July with 542,677 uniques up 75% y-o-y and 3,574,345 page impressions up 96% y-o-y (source: SiteStat). The launch of the bespoke new channel (http://bass.musicradar.com/) focuses entirely on the bass music sector, catering for the growing market of bass products. The new area uses brand new, bass-specific content, with news, reviews, features and tutorials on the latest equipment and gear.

Speaking about the new channel, MusicRadar.com Editor in Chief Mike Goldsmith said:

“We already have substantial heritage in the bass sector as we’ve covered a wide range of bass guitars, amps and stacks since MusicRadar’s launch in 2007. However feedback revealed that not only did we need the same high quality content as featured on our Guitars, Tech and Drums sections, but we needed a dedicated, bass-only area for bassists to bookmark and commercial partners to concentrate their efforts.

This area isn’t just a ‘search results page’ for existing bass content on MusicRadar. We are significantly increasing our investment into brand new, bass-specific content as well as working closely with our commercial partners to feature and showcase their products for our hungry audience of bassists.”

In a further development for the website, MusicRadar has also launched the StoreFinder application, which aims to drive footfall direct to UK retailers from the site. The bespoke branded solution is tailored to each manufacturer, and allows consumers to find their local retailer through the application, whilst browsing their products on MusicRadar.

The first StoreFinder application is in partnership with Peavey (http://www.musicradar.com/storefinder/peavey) with further plans for a combined service in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.

Andy Rust, Marketing Manager for Peavey said:

“Peavey are delighted to be supporting our bricks and mortar retailers by being the first MI company to integrate a branded StoreFinder in to MusicRadar.com.

We believe this solution will offer huge support to UK retail and help direct musicians researching Peavey and Trace Elliot products online to find there local store. With more and more musicians using the internet making the journey easy and simple to direct consumers in to shops is crucial.”

Movie bible declares “There Will be Blood” the best of the noughties

Total Film, the influential UK movie magazine and website, has named “There Will Be Blood” as the decade’s greatest movie, in a poll of critics to celebrate the end of the noughties.

The 2007 US drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was loosely based on a 1920s novel about Southern California’s oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The film received critical praise and was nominated for numerous awards, including eight Oscars, with Daniel Day-Lewis winning ‘Best Actor.’

Other films making it into the “Decade’s most iconic movies” poll included “The Dark Knight” as ‘Blockbuster of the Decade’, with 2001 US movie Donnie Darko crowned ‘Cult of the Decade’ – the movie even spawning its own Christmas number one single for Gary Jules cover of Mad World. British actor Simon Pegg appears twice in Total Film’s list thanks to his starring role in 2004 “Zomromcom” Shaun of the Dead for ‘Comedy of the Decade’ and as chief engineer Scotty in 2009’s Star Trek – picked as the ‘Sci-fi of the Decade.’

Total Film – Decade’s most iconic movies

Epic of the Decade – The Lord of the Rings
Blockbuster of the Decade – The Dark Knight
Reboot of the Decade – Casino Royale
Sci-fi of the Decade – Star Trek
Coolest of the Decade – Sin City
Comedy of the Decade – Shaun of the Dead
Superhero of the Decade – Spider-Man
Franchise of the Decade – Harry Potter
Cult of the Decade – Donnie Darko
Best Film of the Decade – There Will Be Blood

Jamie Graham is Deputy Editor of Total Film:

“The Total Film selections were designed to identify the films that have most shaped the landscape of modern mainstream cinema. But we also felt it was important to reward the ‘best’ film of the decade, and this category saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood pip the likes of No Country For Old Men, Mulholland Drive, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Memento to the top spot.”

The full rundown and exclusive 45-page best of the decade feature with all-new Total Film interviews with directors, cast and crew appears in the latest issue of Total Film, on sale Wednesday, 16th December, with a cover price of £3.99

Digital enhanced LG Chocolate mobile phone print ad gives T3 & Total Film readers exclusive Avatar trailer

16/11/09– LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, has teamed up with Future, the special-interest media group as part of its global partnership with 20th Century Fox to promote the launch of forthcoming epic action adventure movie, Avatar and its new LG Chocolate BL-40 widescreen mobile phone.

In a deal brokered by Mindshare, LG’s media agency, Future’s flagship technology and film brands, T3 and Total Film, will feature an exclusive augmented reality enhanced gatefold in their December issues. The 6-page advert promotes the crystal-clear cinema-aspect screen of LG’s Chocolate BL-40 mobile using assets from the eagerly-anticipated Avatar movie from visionary Director, James Cameron.

In a first for Future’s UK print portfolio, the LG gatefold is enhanced with augmented reality technology – allowing readers to go online and engage with the print advert via their webcam. By holding the special augmented reality icon up to the webcam, readers will unlock a special Avatar trailer (created exclusively by 20th Century Fox for the LG campaign) which plays on a user-controllable 3D rendering of the new LG Chocolate BL40 handset.

The in-magazine activity will be supported by digital media on T3.com and totalfilm.com. There will be a bespoke video walk-through, where T3.com presenters will explain the AR technology and show users how to access the content. This will be further bolstered by takeover reskins on both sites and behavioural targeted display advertising.

Fitting into LG’s global Avatar campaign, the augmented reality advert takes T3 and Total Film readers to the dedicated LG Avatar microsite (http://www.lge.co.uk/avatar) where they get a chance to win a VIP trip to the premiere of Avatar in London, by uploading their very own Avatar. Using sophisticated modelling technology, the photo is combined with a Na’vi character from the film to create a unique character. The user is then entered into a prize draw, which will also see their Avatar appear in a personalised online LG Avatar advert.

“We’re delighted to be working with Future on such an exciting campaign,” said John Barton, Sales and Marketing Director at LG. “Both Avatar and the new LG Chocolate BL40 represent innovations in their respective industries which this campaign will bring to life by delivering a cutting edge platform to interact with our customers”

“We are thrilled to be working with LG on this exciting Avatar partnership. The campaign is engaging, creative and extremely innovative, which is ideal for the film. All the elements have been executed brilliantly and we look forward the results,” said Victoria McCarthy, Fox UK Brand Promotions Manager

Malcolm Stoodley, Sales Director, Future, added:

“I’m delighted that Mindshare and LG chose to work with Future on this innovative, exciting, and integrated campaign to promote the new Chocolate phone and Avatar. As Future’s first augmented reality campaign in the UK, this is an exciting new format for advertisers that really brings this campaign alive for our readers. With an audience of influential movie and technology advocates, the exclusive Avatar footage showcases this pioneering new film and LG’s new mobile phone to T3 and Total Film readers like no other medium can deliver.”

The gatefold appears in the December issue of T3, on sale nowand the December issue of Total Film, on sale Wednesday, 18th November, both with a coverprice of £3.99.
